Self-drilling Rock Bolts

Self-drilling rock bolts are a unique form of anchor bolts, rock bolts, and rock bars. They are designed using advanced technology to assist in efficient construction projects. These rock bolts include a sacrificial drill bit, a hollow bar that resembles hollow rock bolts, a coupler for extending the bar as required, a plate (flat or domed), a nut, and a centralizer. Unlike traditional anchor bolts, self-drilling rock bolts consolidate drilling, grouting, and anchoring into a single process. This makes them particularly suitable for challenging geological environments.

Components of Self-drilling Rock Bolts

Hollow Anchor Bars

The hollow anchor rod of self-drilling rock bolts is specially designed with a hollow core, enabling the drilling, grouting, and anchoring functions to be integrated into a single unit.
This high-quality product is manufactured with thick wall steel tubing, and cold-rolled threads according to ISO standards. It is classified into two types: R thread and T thread. The R-type thread features a constantly corrugated shape, while the T-type thread exhibits an irregularly trapezoidal shape.

Drill Bits

The drill bit of self-drilling rock bolts, typically made of robust materials such as 42CrMo, etc., can withstand the drilling forces and effectively penetrate the rock. This drill bit incorporates cutting edges and flutes to assist in the drilling process.
The main distinction between this drill bit and other rock bolt bits is its disposable design. Once the drill bit is installed with the hollow anchor system, it is never removed. This eliminates the need for a replacement process and simplifies the construction method.

Couplers

Self-drilling rock bolts often include a coupling mechanism at one end. The coupler is used to elongate the hollow anchor rod. It can be used in kinds of conditions that need different lengths of hollow anchor rods. In the drilling process, the coupler enables direct end-to-end energy transmission between bars. Therefore it can reduce the loss of impact energy of the hollow anchor rods. The material of the coupler is usually high-quality metal, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, etc., which is strong and durable.

Plates

The plate of the self-drilling rock bolt is a formed load-bearing plate with a central hole, which is installed at the end of the hollow anchor bar, between the nut and the rock formation. The function of the plate is to apply anchoring force to the surrounding rock, transfer stress, improve the end force and enhance the reinforcement effect. According to the shape, the plate can be divided into the domed plate and the flat plate. Generally, the domed plate is used for soil nail application and the flat plate is used for mini-pile application.

Nuts

The nuts of the self-drilling rock bolt can be divided by name into three categories: Hex Nuts, Domed Nuts, and Spherical Collar Nuts. The hex nuts are mainly used in conjunction with flat plates for applications where the anchor is perpendicular to the support surface or at a small angle. Domed nuts and spherical collar nuts are mainly used in conjunction with domed plates when the anchor is at an angle to the support surface. In this case, a larger bore plate is used, the domed nut/ spherical collar nut can form a line of contact with the bore of the plate. If hex nuts are used, the contact will be incomplete and the nut may fall into the inner hole of the plate, affecting the support.

Centralizers

The main function of a centralizer in a self-drilling rock bolt is to maintain the proper alignment and position of the rock bolt during installation. It's designed and employed to provide a grout cover of a minimum of 20.0 mm around the self-drilling rock bolt. In the absence of a centralizer, the anchor bolt may deviate from its intended location in challenging ground conditions, thereby negatively impacting the anchoring effect and stability of the structure.

Tunnel and Underground Engineering

Typically utilized for initial support during tunneling. Through the use of hollow bars of these bolts, high-pressure grouting is effectively achieved, ultimately enhancing the stability of the soil or rock mass and ensuring surface stability. Applications include fore-piling, radial support, tunnel-face support, locking foot support, and tunnel portal reinforcement.

Ground and Foundation Engineering

Essential in ground and foundation engineering as micro piles. They transfer pressure, tension, or loads to surrounding soil, reducing structural loads and controlling deformation.  Their applications include building foundations, tower and bridge reinforcement, soundproof walls, protective screens, anti-floating piles, and retaining beams.

Slope Stabilization Engineering

Offen applied in slope stabilization projects where geological conditions are challenging. These projects are fortified by the entire anchoring system's resistance to tensile and shear forces. Utilized as soil nail support, slope protection barrier, falling rock protection, retaining wall, embankment stability, and roadbed reinforcement, and other diverse scenarios.
